A metro man made a disturbing find on his morning walk over the weekend: a bloody suitcase with what appeared to be a dead animal inside.
Police say that the suitcase was discovered behind a church in northwest Oklahoma City.
Police confirmed they responded to the bloody suitcase on Saturday around 7:40 a.m. and called Oklahoma City Animal Welfare. As of Monday, the suitcase with the rotting animal was in the same location.
The suitcase behind a church near Northwest 122nd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue was something one concerned citizen was not used to seeing on morning walks with his dog.
“It was strange that it was sitting here in the middle of the church parking lot,” said D.H., a witness. “As I got closer, I could see there was something coming from it.”
He noticed blood was draining from the suitcase and said the smell was overpowering.
“Took my dog home and I called the police,” said D.H. “They came out and they checked it out.”
He said the officer opened the suitcase and he was able to see inside.
“There was a dead, bloody animal,” said D.H. “I could see the fur and from the fur patterns it looks like a dog.”
Another resident whose home backs up to the church parking lot told News 9 she called the police several times starting Saturday morning and throughout the weekend. Each time she was told animal welfare was notified and would respond.
“It is still sitting here, still open, still rotting,” said D.H.
News 9's calls to animal welfare went unanswered offices due to offices being closed on Mondays.
Neighbors are disappointed nothing has been done to dispose of the suitcase. They question if animal welfare will investigate where it came from.
“You always hear in like the movies and TV massacring animals is the beginning stages of a serial killer,” said D.H. “It’s in your neighborhood, a block from your house. It’s very, very concerning.”
News 9 also called the church to see if the cameras on the back of the building worked or captured anything, however, the church offices were closed for the day.
Oklahoma City Animal Welfare responded on Tuesday with this statement:
“In the past two weeks, two suitcases have been recovered with what appears to be animal remains. The bodies have been so badly decomposed that we are not able to tell if there is an cruelty or neglect involved. There is no evidence that the two cases are related to each other at this time. Unless more evidence surfaces, the investigation is closed.”
