With inflation, going to the grocery store costs a lot more now.

Good News Ministries and the Walter's Way Foundation got $150,000 in federal money to buy groceries for people in need.

Listening for your number to be called is worth the wait because at the end of that waiting is Patricia Robinson from Good News Ministries, handing out free boxes of groceries.

From fresh produce to canned goods, the volunteers are making sure that people in their community are well-fed.

Walter Block and Joy Block-Wright say they started giving away food because they noticed the growing need for more support in North Tulsa.

“It's growing so rapid in our community,” said Walter. “The food desert in the area really needs individuals distributing food and groceries on this side of town, and since that's not available to us, we are able to open our doors.”

The group sees 125 people every week. Patricia says it's a great feeling to give back to those in need because even though she's a volunteer, she gets her groceries here, too.

“Every time I look at my refrigerator, I am like, thank you, Lord, thank you, Lord, thank you, Lord. I am appreciative because there are things I wouldn't be able to buy in the store, like the different juices we have, the gallons of milk and the fresh vegetables. I wouldn't be able to afford that at the grocery store,” she said.

Joy says money from a recent grant will allow them to support more people in need of help.

“That's what we are here to do on this earth, is to help each other,” she said. “For us to know that we are actually serving the community, and they come out and give us hugs. They become our friends. To know we are helping them, it's rewarding.”

You can pick up groceries every Wednesday from 10 to noon at Good News Ministries off Memorial Drive.
