A group that helps veterans is up for a Land Rover Defender Service Award.
Heroes Hope provides help to homeless veterans who are trying to find work and reconnect with family.
Sean Lord and his wife moved to Tulsa six years ago. They spent time downtown to get to know their new city, and something quickly became apparent.
“There is a significant amount of homeless people in Tulsa. Maybe because it's a small town and you see it more often, maybe it's because Oklahoma has a lot of resources so there is a pool of people that you see, but as we started talking to them, we realized that a decent percentage of them were veterans and were struggling,” he said.
As a former marine, Sean wanted to help.
Tulsa's point-in-time count this year found of the more than 1,300 people experiencing homelessness more than 100 were veterans.
Sean found there were resources that were available to the veterans, but they didn't feel like they could access them due to their struggles with PTSD from their time in the military.
Sean and his wife created Heroes Hope. The organization is a 6- to 18-month program that helps homeless veterans by offering free housing and mentorship while providing a community of veterans who know their struggles.
So far, Heroes Hope has helped 30 veterans get back on their feet.
“The tears that come to their eyes and they can see that they finally have something that is theirs for the first time in maybe years, the joy that comes in that moment knowing that we have built a support team for these guys before they walk in the door, that's what we are all about,” Sean said.
If the organization were to win this service award, it would receive $25,000 and a new vehicle. Anyone can vote for Heroes Hope for the first two weeks of October here.
