It's Welcome Week for the city of Tulsa, and one organization is using this time to help immigrants and refugees find jobs in Tulsa.
Tulsa is recognized as a majority-minority city, meaning a majority of people living here are persons of color.
YWCA's Angela Munoz said Tulsa is the only certified Welcoming City in the state. That's a designation for a city that has created policies and programs that focus on immigrant inclusion.
YWCA is putting on a job fair this morning to celebrate and embrace everyone as part of the city's Welcome Week. Munoz said Tulsa is continuing to grow and there is plenty of opportunity here for people who decide to live here.
"I know there's a large vision for Tulsa to be just this thriving city and community, and I think bringing and welcoming individuals from the immigrants and refugee communities is helping to grow Tulsa for sure," Munoz said.
Munoz believes Tulsa is open to diversity, and many employers are focused on embracing equity and inclusion.
"I think with that, it's definitely attractive to individuals that are resettling here through the immigrants and refugee communities. Tulsa is growing. There's so much opportunity available here. We have new companies that are coming every year, and so I think it's just a great opportunity for individuals who resettle here," Munoz said.
Munoz said YWCA hopes to have more job fairs like this in the future. The job fair itself runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the YWCA Tulsa Southern Ridge Center today, September 17. There will be translators and people to help assist anyone who shows up.
