Excitement is high at the Tulsa Zoo, where Cera, the newest member of the flamingo flock, has been attracting attention. Despite being just over a month old, the chick has shown an impressive independent streak that sets her apart from the rest of the flock.
Cera, who hatched on August 13, was named after the strong-willed triceratops from the movie "The Land Before Time.” Her name reflects the personality traits she began displaying at a very young age.
Taylor Harris from the Tulsa Zoo's Birds Department said they noticed early on that she was ahead of the other chicks they've had. Harris said Cera's parents are quite independent, and at just two days old, she started following them away from the nest, which is unusual for a chick her age.
Cera’s early confidence has continued, as she regularly ventures out with the flock and even returns to her nest on her own at night.
Developing Taste and Color
While the adult flamingos snack on krill, Cera is not quite ready to join them. For now, she is still being fed crop milk by her parents. At just over a month old, Cera is already quite large for her age.
Like the rest of the flock, Cera will eventually transition to eating krill and specially formulated pellets. These foods play a crucial role in developing the signature pink hue that flamingos are known for.
Currently, Cera is still covered in the soft, gray downy feathers of a chick.
Visit Cera at the Tulsa Zoo
Cera is the only flamingo chick of the season, making her a special attraction at the Tulsa Zoo. Visitors are encouraged to come and see her as she continues to grow and thrive in her newly revamped exhibit.
"We’re thrilled to have had a successful nesting season after the exhibit renovations," Harris said. "With cooler temperatures on the way, it’s a perfect time to visit."
