Nearly 94, Miss Jean Keeps The Fun Alive At The Tulsa State Fair

A woman has been working at the Tulsa Fair for more than 20 years. And just because she’s about to turn 94 doesn’t mean she’s thinking of retiring anytime soon.

Before the fun can begin, everyone must get by security.

At the vendor door, there’s already fun to be had when getting your ticket scanned and hand-stamped by Jean Rodgers.

“Our security is wonderful," said Jean. "It’s so much fun.”

Jean, known to most as Miss Jean, is a little older than most employees.

“Almost 94," she said. "I’m 93 and too many months.”

She retired before, but it wasn't for her.

“The first six months was great. I sat around and did all the things I thought I would do over the next 50 years, and then all at once there was no bucket list. I was through."

Through with sitting around, Miss Jean took a job at the Tulsa State Fair.

“My enthusiasm has not dwindled; that’s the problem. I still think I’m 60, but that’s better because I used to think I was still 29.”

It doesn’t feel like work. She says it’s what keeps her alive.

“What’s my alternative? I think if I had to stay home, I’d sit in a rocking chair and die.”

With no plans to retire again, Miss Jean is adamant she will be back in her chair next year.

“I don’t want to miss anything.”

Who knew a security guard could have so much fun at the fair?

“This is more fun than anything else,” she said.
