Tulsa police received multiple 911 calls around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday from the Bradford Apartments near MLK Boulevard and the Gilcrease Expressway. When officers arrived, they found a 3-year-old boy dead, who had been struck by a vehicle.
Investigators say the driver was traveling at a reasonable speed through the complex when the child ran across the parking lot. The boy was dragged 5 to 10 feet, according to police.
The driver, distraught after the incident, was assaulted by residents of the complex, prompting him to get back into his car and leave, police said. As he drove away, shots were fired at him.
"This was a horrible, tragic event, and when you add gun violence to that, no good comes from it. It just gets worse," said Capt. Matt Arnold of the Tulsa Police Department. "It just compounds a tragedy."
The driver returned to the scene after officers arrived and was not injured, police said.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance video from the apartment complex to identify who fired at the driver. No arrests have been made in connection with the crash or the shooting.
Officers are also investigating why the child was alone in the parking lot.
