A local non-profit is working with parents in the North Tulsa community to support them and their children during the school year.
The North Tulsa Parent Alliance, part of the Met Cares Foundation, is collaborating with families to address academic needs.
Leaders of the alliance are encouraging families to consider Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
IEPs help identify students’ unique academic needs and provide training for parents on how to address those needs in collaboration with schools.
The Parent Alliance is also working to establish a Parent Academy to train parents on supporting their children's academic success.
Dion’trae Hayes, Executive Director of the Met Cares Foundation, oversees the Parent Alliance. She says parents with elementary-aged children are facing some of the biggest challenges.
“We’ve got tons of parents who say they need in-school tutoring, after-school tutoring, and some type of mechanism to teach parents about new math and how to approach these problems,” Hayes said. “So, we’re working with those administrators and educators and our funders to create something that bridges that gap.”
The Parent Alliance is holding a Parent Summit on December 7 at McLain High School. Educators will engage with parents on improving academics, school safety, and parent involvement.
