Oklahoma’s City Council held its bi-weekly meeting on Tuesday, discussing several key items.
On the agenda was a possible $875,000 settlement of a lawsuit between the city and the family of 15-year-old Stavian Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was shot and killed by police officers in Nov. of 2020 during an armed robbery at the Okie Gas & Express store, located in the 7900 block of South Western Avenue in Oklahoma City.
Council members voted to defer discussion of the settlement for two weeks and will discuss it again on Jan. 14.
If approved, the settlement would go to Rodriguez’s mother.
Tuesday’s meeting also happens as the Asian Task Force of Oklahoma is protesting after Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond dismissed criminal charges against an Oklahoma City Police Officer.

The officer was charged with assault and battery after a traffic stop involving 71-year-old Lich Vu. An altercation was caught on the police body camera showed Vu flicking the officer in the chest, and the officer responded by taking Vu to the ground. Vu is still recovering from his injuries.
An internal investigation involving OCPD is ongoing.
Mark Nelson, President of the Oklahoma City Fraternal Order of Police (OKC FOP) shared this statement with News 9:
"The recent incident was extremely unfortunate, and the FOP is always willing to discuss ways to better prepare officers and meet the needs of our community.
In fact, the FOP has reached out to and has scheduled meetings with leaders in the Vietnamese and Asian communities. We look forward to engaging in a productive dialogue in the coming days.
We take seriously the responsibility that comes with protecting all members of our community and we look forward to working through this together."
