As 2024 comes to a close, the year proved to be a whirlwind of political drama and historic moments.
From legislative battles to election shake-ups, this is Alex Cameron's look back at the major events that defined the year.
The year began with optimism surrounding a bipartisan border bill championed by Oklahoma Senator James Lankford. The legislation, aimed at enhancing border security, was seen as a potential breakthrough. However, former President Donald Trump, then campaigning for re-election, urged Republicans to abandon support. The bill ultimately failed, leaving border reform efforts stalled.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas faced intense criticism from Republicans over border issues. In February, the House impeached Mayorkas after a failed initial attempt. However, the Senate did not hold a trial, resulting in an acquittal.
The Republican primaries quickly solidified Donald Trump as the GOP nominee, overshadowing other contenders. On the Democratic side, President Joe Biden’s early debate struggles sparked concerns within his party. His weak performance in June’s first debate with Trump led to mounting pressure from Democratic leaders.
In July, an assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally shook the nation. Despite the close call, Trump escaped with only a graze to his ear. The Secret Service faced intense scrutiny, prompting congressional hearings on security failures.
Amid growing pressure, President Biden announced his decision to step down while endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. The move set up a closely watched race between Harris and Trump. Their September debate drew widespread attention, with many praising Harris’s performance.
In November, Trump won decisively, securing a significant electoral vote margin. Republicans also gained control of the Senate and maintained a slim majority in the House, creating a Republican trifecta for the incoming administration.
As 2024 ends, the federal government faces a potential shutdown. A bipartisan agreement to keep the government funded unraveled after public criticism from Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk, whom some Democrats have dubbed “President Musk.” House Republican leadership withdrew the bill, leaving last-minute negotiations underway to avoid a shutdown just before the GOP takes full control.
