Leaders across Oklahoma are reacting to the death of BankFirst Founder Gene Rainbolt.

Attorney General Gentner Drummond released a statement on Rainbolt's death, saying:

“I am saddened to learn of the death of Gene Rainbolt. One of Oklahoma’s greatest civic leaders, Gene was a proud Oklahoman, through and through – a product of the Dust Bowl who went on to become an innovator in banking, a champion for education and a leading light in philanthropy. His contributions to the state he dearly loved are beyond measure. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. While we grieve his loss, the life of Gene Rainbolt can inspire us all.”

Senate Pro Tem-Elect Lonnie Paxton released a statement saying:

“Oklahoma lost a beloved icon and trailblazer with the passing of Gene Rainbolt.” Pro Tem-Elect Paxton said. “His vision, generosity and relentless optimism transformed our state for the better. Through his philanthropic endeavors, advocacy work and leadership, it was clear that Gene was committed to solving problems facing our state. He worked tirelessly to uplift Oklahomans and created countless opportunities for many, while inspiring hope throughout countless communities. I have had the privilege of getting to know his son, David, over the past several years. Through this friendship, it is clear to me that Gene’s spirit and willingness to help others will continue.
“Gene Rainbolt’s passing is a profound loss for our state. Yet, as we mourn, we also celebrate a life well-lived and his inspirational legacy. My wife Misti and I keep the Rainbolt family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

State Superintendent Ryan Walters released a statement on X saying:

Oklahoma is praying for the Rainbolt family today as we learn of the passing of Gene. Gene was larger than life and left a huge positive footprint on our state. He was not only instrumental in the Oklahoma business community, but he was a great example as a family man and a friend to many. We are going to miss him and the impact that he had.

In a statement on X, Mayor David Holt said,

"For decades, Gene Rainbolt has been either overtly or quietly a part of almost everything good happening in our city and state.Obviously, BancFirst is a tremendous story of entrepreneurial success, but I think Gene’s real legacy is the causes he supported. And he wasn’t an idle philanthropist. He had a passionate worldview - one based on equality, fairness and justice - and he worked to be the change he wanted to see. He was also quick with an encouraging word for people doing good things. I suspect there are hundreds of people in OKC who think of him like a father figure. On a deeply personal level, he was impactful to many other leaders in our city. We knew he wouldn’t live forever, but we hoped he would. We send our deepest condolences to his family."

House Democratic Leader Cyndi Munson (D-OK), released this statement following the news of Rainbolt's death:

“I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Gene Rainbolt, my dear friend and constituent. Oklahoma has lost an incredible leader—an incredible human being. Gene Rainbolt believed in the best of all of us. He invested his time and treasure in organizations and programs that helped all Oklahomans. He knew his influence and leadership would make a true difference, so he spent his life making sure we all knew about the real needs of Oklahomans. He always looked out for the marginalized and those who needed extra help.
“He was a true friend to me—always providing a listening ear and giving of his time to mentor me, especially as I began my journey in public service. I will never forget our first meeting. When very few people believed in me, he helped me to see what I was capable of.
“I have always admired—and been inspired by—his dedication to improving our criminal justice system, our public education system, and ensuring that every Oklahoman had an opportunity for economic prosperity. He believed in bettering the lives of every person, and he put his belief into action. His deep care for the future of our state was—and will continue to be—unmatched.
“I am sending my love and condolences to the entire Rainbolt family, who have also become dear friends of mine over the years. I will miss you, my dear friend. May you rest in peace.”

In a post on X Gov. Kevin Stitt shared a statement saying:

"Gene Rainbolt was a great Oklahoman, a pioneering businessman, and a committed public servant. He served his state honorably and gave generously to causes that benefitted Oklahomans. He truly embodied the Oklahoma Standard. Sarah and I are praying for his family and friends."
