It’s a form of therapy for veterans, giving them the opportunity to learn a skill while creating meaningful flags.

“I realized when I was building those flags that I was not thinking about the depression,” said Kris Morgan, creator of Flags 4 Vets Made by Vets.

Morgan, an Air Force veteran, founded the nonprofit five years ago after struggling with severe PTSD.

“I put a gun to my mouth and pulled the trigger, and it misfired. It just went click, and that was the best click I had ever heard in my life,” said Morgan.

The therapeutic value Morgan finds in creating flags is something he now shares with other veterans.

“The things that he needed, other veterans need as well, and so he is just pouring that out to the community,” said veteran Carrie Moore.

Chuck Maxwell, who has crafted several flags through the program, considers Morgan a friend. Hearing Morgan’s story never fails to affect him.

“It’s very emotional because, you know, I’ve lost brothers to suicide,” said Maxwell.

Through the program, veterans can be nominated to receive a flag, create their own, or have family members make one for them.

“But once they receive this flag from a loved one, and they learn about my program, ninety percent of the time they will reach out to me and say, ‘Hey, can I come help?’” said Morgan.

One recent recipient is veteran JD Varner, the husband of coworker Lacie Lowry. After serving 26 years in the Navy, Varner was a perfect candidate for a flag.

“I am completely blown away,” said Varner.

Varner’s deep appreciation for the flag and what it represents was evident, as he became emotional while discussing its significance.

“You know, this flag represents so much of our nation and so many people that have given so much for it, and it’s a true honor to be able to receive something like this,” said Varner.

Varner has already chosen the perfect place to display his flag.
