It’s a friendship dating back to their youth, and even after more than 50 years, these men, now in their 70s, remain bonded by their shared accomplishment of earning the Eagle Scout badge.
“There were five of us that lived on Southeast 51st, one on 52nd, and then Dennis lived on 49th, which was basically the next street over,” said Terry Wood.
From a young age, they were all active in Boy Scouts and achieved Eagle Scout status. The lessons they learned have stayed with them throughout their lives.
“Being reverent, respecting elders, and helping,” said Johnny Schofield.
“It helps build values, a work ethic, and camaraderie,” said Keith Bennett.
They were part of Troop 186, also known as the Crow Patrol, complete with their own theme song. Though the years have passed, their friendship is as strong as ever.
“We know just about everything about each other. We’re a family unit, basically,” said Terry Wood.
At least once a year, Terry Wood, Eddie Wood, Johnny Schofield, David Bennett, Keith Bennett, Dennis Dobbs, Steven Corday, and their 91-year-old scout leader, Don Corday, reunite. Like any old friends, their gatherings are full of laughter.
“They couldn’t find the right thermometer, so they had to use what they had—the rectal one,” joked Don Corday.
The guys caught up on family and shared a meal. Though some live in other states, the friendship transcends any distance.
“But if he needs something, I’ll come help him. All he’s got to do is call,” said Dennis Dobbs.
