Following The New Year's Day New Orleans Terror Attack, Oklahoma Senator Darrell Weaver of Moore, a former head of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, discussed the challenges of preventing violent crimes and terrorist acts, highlighting the need for constant vigilance from local, state, and federal law enforcement.
“You can’t protect everything all the time, and that’s the problem. The criminal element has escalated to the point where you never know what the bad guys are going to do next,” said Weaver.
While preventing terrorist acts may be difficult, Weaver says that law enforcement will continue to be prepared and respond accordingly. Investigators will examine the backgrounds of suspects to determine whether they acted alone or were part of a larger network.
"The number one function of government is to protect citizens, but it's hard to do when the target is always moving," Weaver said. "It’s always been a cat-and-mouse game between the good guys and the bad guys. Are they going to use a vehicle, an airplane, a bomb, or a sniper? The key is gathering intelligence, having a police presence, and being prepared if something happens."
The Sugar Bowl, which was postponed, went on Thursday without any issues.
The mayor of New Orleans says the city will be ready to host the Super Bowl in February.
