As winter weather approaches, Oklahoma City crews are hard at work preparing city streets.

Crews are pre-treating 1,700 miles of snow routes on Wednesday. On Thursday, 32 trucks equipped with salt spreaders and plows will hit the streets, ready to clear the way.

City workers will operate in 12-hour shifts, focusing on treating and clearing major roads. Officials are asking drivers to stay at least 200 feet behind the trucks for safety.

“Do what you can today and stay home if you can,” said Public Works Emergency Operations Manager Mike Love Jr. “If you can’t, make sure your tire pressure is good, give yourself an extra hour, and get some new windshield wipers if you can.”

To pre-treat the roads, crews are using beet juice, which Love said should make clearing the streets easier when snow and ice hit.

It’s important to note that neighborhood streets are not included in the city’s designated snow routes. Officials advise drivers to stick to treated routes if travel is necessary.
