Feb. 1 marks National Unclaimed Property Day, a reminder for Oklahomans to check if they have forgotten assets or valuables waiting to be claimed. With over $1 billion in unclaimed property held by the Oklahoma State Treasurer’s Office, the chances are high that many residents may find unclaimed funds or items in their name.
What is National Unclaimed Property Day?
National Unclaimed Property Day, observed annually on Feb. 1, raises awareness about unclaimed property programs. According to a press release from the Oklahoma State Treasurer, these programs exist to reunite individuals with forgotten assets, which can include utility deposits, uncashed paychecks, or even family heirlooms left behind during life’s transitions.
Why Does Unclaimed Property Exist?
Unclaimed property often results from moves, job changes, or significant life events that cause individuals or businesses to lose track of accounts or valuables. These assets are reported to the Oklahoma State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division, where they are kept safe until claimed by their rightful owners.
How Common Is Unclaimed Property?
According to the Treasurer’s Office, nearly one in ten Americans have unclaimed property. This initiative is part of a national campaign led by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) to increase awareness and encourage residents to search for their lost assets.
How Can I Search for Unclaimed Property?
Oklahomans can quickly and easily search for unclaimed property in their name or the names of family members by visiting YourMoney.ok.gov.
