Many people experience painful leg and calf cramps at night, which can have several potential causes. News 9 spoke with Dr. Lacy Anderson to explore the underlying factors behind these cramps and discuss preventive measures to help viewers avoid them.
Dehydration is a leading cause of muscle cramps, particularly at night. Insufficient fluid intake can increase the risk of cramping, making proper hydration essential before bedtime.
Certain medications, such as diuretics commonly used for blood pressure and swelling— including hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)—can increase the risk of nighttime leg cramps. Other medications that may contribute to cramping include some diabetes treatments, such as Jardiance, Farxiga, Invokana, and Steglatro, as well as certain cholesterol-lowering drugs.
Dr. Lacy Anderson first recommends that viewers experiencing leg cramps increase their fluid intake for several days to see if the issue resolves. If the cramps persist, she suggests consulting a doctor to determine whether temporarily pausing a prescribed medication may help alleviate symptoms.
