Rumors of a possible mass layoff of 600 civilian workers at Tinker Air Force Base have swirled on social media over the weekend, leaving many worried for their jobs.

Here's what we know so far:

Have any layoffs happened?

No layoffs have taken place so far. News 9 reached out to Tinker Air Force Base on Friday, when rumors first began to circulate. We were redirected to this statement from the United States Air Force:

"Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has indicated that the Pentagon is taking a deliberate, methodical approach to review its workforce and identify positions that may not directly contribute to warfighting success," the statement read. "There has been no direction to relieve Air Force employees at this time."

Base officials confirmed Monday that the statement is still in effect and that they have not been directed to relieve any Tinker employees.

Why did people think the layoffs would happen on Monday, February 24th?

Sunday evening, the news outlet "This is Topeka" reported that the layoffs would occur Monday morning, citing a tip from the National Vice President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) for the 9th District.

AFGE did not respond when asked for comments on the matter.

The rumors of a mass layoff come on the heels of several moves from the Trump Administration's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), including emails sent to federal workers asking them to detail their work and personal accomplishments or face immediate termination.

Will a mass layoff happen at Tinker Air Force Base in the future?

It is still unclear if the purported mass layoffs will occur. Officials from Tinker Air Force Base and the United States Air Force have confirmed layoffs did not happen on Monday but did not confirm or deny the potential for any future layoffs.

News 9 will have the latest coverage if any layoffs do commence.
