Applications open March 3 for Oklahoma homeowners in eight ZIP codes to apply for grants of up to $10,000 to strengthen their roofs, the Oklahoma Insurance Department announced.

The grants are part of OKReady, the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes program, which aims to help homeowners protect their properties against severe weather. Eligible applicants can submit their applications online starting at noon on March 3.

According to the department, the eight ZIP codes selected for the program’s initial launch were chosen based on storm data, insurance loss ratios, and the number of active policies in each area. The selection process included analyzing ZIP codes in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area with high storm-related losses from 2018 to 2022 and those ranked in the 90th percentile of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s national hail loss index.

The selected ZIP codes for the March 3 pilot launch are:

  1. 73049 (Jones)
  2. 73051 (Lexington/Slaughterville)
  3. 73065 (Newcastle)
  4. 73069 (Norman)
  5. 73111 (East Oklahoma City)
  6. 73127 (West Oklahoma City)
  7. 73129 (Southeast Oklahoma City)
  8. 73135 (Southeast Oklahoma City/I-240)

The pilot program is designed to test application processing, address any technical issues, and ensure external partners can manage the grant demand. The department plans to launch additional pilot phases through 2025, with a goal of awarding 1,000 grants by year’s end.

The program will provide up to $10,000 per approved household, with funds allocated toward construction projects that meet the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s FORTIFIED Home – Roof – High Wind designation with the Hail Supplement. Grants will be paid directly to contractors after a home receives the certification.
