Activists against capital punishment gathered to protest down the street from the Oklahoma State Capitol on Thursday, shortly before the planned execution of Death Row inmate Wendell Grissom.

The group of protestors arrived at around 9 a.m. and said they planned to hold a moment of prayer for Grissom, whose execution is scheduled for 10 a.m.

One protestor said Grissom should not have been sentenced to death and called for the state to abolish the criminal punishment.

"We are opposed to capital punishment, particularly in the case of Wendell Grissom," the protestor said. "He was diagnosed as mentally disabled. That was never brought up to the jury and he was sentenced to death."
