The Oklahoma City Zoo is no stranger to fun, and this spring break is no different. On Thursday, the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch navigates the family-friendly activities and events planned at the Oklahoma City Zoo for everyone on break this week.
Kimberly Leser, who is a Behavioral Husbandry and Welfare Manager at the OKC Zoo, explains how spring enrichment with their macaws can connect kids and families with nature, especially understanding the importance of preserving endangered species.
"At the Zoo, we try to contribute to populations that are in decline, and the red-fronted macaw is critically endangered, which means they need a lot of help out in the wild," Leser said.
The OKC Zoo has a lot in store for Animal Enrichment Week, as Leser describes the steady flow of people showing up for the fun.
"There is so much for folks to do when they're here that I don't think people are really even noticing," Leser said. "When they're here, we have our Golden Egg search in the mornings. We also have enrichment every single day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m."
Leser also explains that they do enrichment for the animals everyday, but this time of year they do themed enrichment for Easter.
"We want to give them options on how to enjoy their day," she said. "We want to make sure we're giving them all the opportunities to use their species-specific behaviors. So that way they have a good life."
The enrichment and spring break activities are included with your general admission to the OKC Zoo.
The OKC Zoo is also offering summer camps soon for kids who want to go deeper into the exposure and care of wildlife.
These summer camps give kids the chance to make enrichment, learn how to be a zookeeper, and how the Zoo takes care of animals.
