The Blackwelder Brass Quintet is hosting its annual recital on April 5th at 6 p.m. at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University in the medium rehearsal hall. The recital is free and open to the public.
Two members of the quintet, trumpet player Karl Huber and tuba player Dalton Williams joined the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages porch to discuss the upcoming recital.
A: Well, our event is our annual recital for our brass quintet. This brass quintet is run out of Oklahoma City University. It's going to be an amazing recital. We have some great composers. Yeah, absolutely. We're playing some works by Michael Kamen, Anthony O'Toole, Andrew Batterham, and Kevin McKee. And we've been working on it for a long time. We're really excited about it.
A: Preparing for this, we spend six hours a week or more rehearsing with each other, which helps because we all live in the same house, too, luckily. But we have spent every single waking moment pouring over this music to make it really special.
A: It'll last about one hour, is what we plan for the recital. So a nice short suite, then you can get dinner afterward.
A: We're going to have a nice stage set up for us, some plants and whatnot to make it nice and homey. But really, it's just going to be the five of us playing some great, really exciting music. I mean, we have one piece that I particularly like called Iron Horse that is about a train that is just... Oh, it's so awesome.
