Saturday at noon, the parking lot at Icon Theater at 4623 NW 23rd St. will fill up with hundreds of really cool cars, showing off their stuff for a really great cause.
It was a concept born out of life-changing news.
“I found out my son had autism a couple of months ago,” said Trevonne Hendricks, creator of the Drive Autism car show.
Hendricks wasn’t sure how he felt about the news, but he immediately sought information
“I want everybody to celebrate autism. Don’t feel like it’s something to hide,” said Hendricks.
So reached out to some of the local car clubs, and this Saturday, he is planning the first of many celebrations with an event that he’s calling Drive Autism.
“We are going to have all of the cars meet up at 11:30 at Wheeler Park, and then from there we’ll cruise all together at twelve o’clock from there to Icon theaters,” said Bless Miye, with Bless Visuals and co-founder of Drive Autism car show.
Cars will be on display, rain or shine.
“Due to the rain and the weather, we are probably only going to keep them out there for two hours and then have everybody start coming in at 2:30 to get ready for the movie premiere,” said Hendricks.
With the movie Minecraft premiering this weekend, Icon is providing 100 free tickets to the 3 p.m. showing for guests of the car show.
Hendricks is hoping the day will send a positive message to the community as well as to the kids with autism.
“I’m hoping they will come out and just see and enjoy the cars and see that other people, from outside of autism, see that car groups support good causes,” said Hendricks.
