The weather is beautiful, and the YMCA of greater Oklahoma City wants to encourage families, especially kids, to get out and get healthy.

“To expose the community to healthy activities, and events and show what the YMCA of greater Oklahoma City can provide to our community,” said Jennifer Armstrong of The YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City.

They call it Healthy Kids Day, and this year things are bigger and better.

“In the past we’ve always broken off and done Healthy Kids Day at each branch, but this year we’ll be doing an association wide event, so all of our branches will be coming down to Scissortail Park on Sunday to have some fun,” said Armstrong.

Staff from the YMCA and YWCA will all be on hand working with kids and adults, showing them fun ways to get active and get moving, with a cardio dance party, family yoga and lots of games.

“We’ll have the fire department, the police department, we’ll have the Thunder activity bus,” said Armstrong.

With of course, lots of free stuff.

“We are going to give out some great prizes, like a one-year family membership to the YMCA, Feed the Children will be handing out some healthy snacks that day,” said Armstrong.

The Healthy Kids Day initiative is right in line with TSET’s shape your future mission.

“To help Oklahoman’s eat better, move more, and to be tobacco free,” said TSET Director of Public information and Government Affairs, Thomas Larson.

They aren’t coming empty handed

“Four hundred jump ropes that some of the attendees are going to take with them, because being healthy is not just about one day, it’s really about doing healthy things day after day,” said Larson.

“We’ll have performances from the Oklahoma City Ballet, and the Natural Notes choir as well,” said Armstrong.

With food trucks and close to 30 vendors the day promises to be a lot of fun.

“The greatest part of this whole thing is that this is going to be a free event,” said Armstrong.

Healthy Kids Day is this Sunday, April 13th, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Scissortail Park.
