Families gathered at Dolese Youth Park for more than just a morning in the sun—they came to fish.

The event is part of Hooked on Fishing, a monthly program hosted by Oklahoma City Parks that teaches kids how to cast a line and connect with the outdoors.

Held the first Saturday of every month from April to November, Hooked on Fishing is free for kids ages 5 to 15. Each child receives a rod, reel, bait, and beginner-friendly instruction, with no experience necessary. The goal is to get kids outdoors and “hooked” on the joys of fishing and nature.

“When a kid catches a fish for the first time, it sets them down the road of going outside and enjoying nature,” said John, a representative for Hooked on Fishing.

Oklahoma City operates one of the most comprehensive urban fishery programs in the nation, boasting a city-run hatchery and management of over 7,200 acres of water. Oklahoma City’s Parks and Recreation Department partners with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, local bait and tackle shops, and the Police athletics to make the monthly events possible.

The program also hosts interactive open houses where kids can see and touch various types of fish.

Common catches during the events include bluegill, sunfish, and largemouth bass. Catch-and-release is encouraged to support conservation efforts.

Parents are welcome to attend and are encouraged to pre-register online at OKC Parks' official website, but walk-ups are also welcome.

This month’s event took place at Dolese Youth Park, but the next outing will be held at Scissortail Park. All events run from 10 a.m. to noon.

Whether it’s your child’s first time holding a rod or your family’s favorite weekend activity, Hooked on Fishing casts a wide net to bring Oklahoma City families together.
