For many women, severe period cramps can be more than just uncomfortable—they can be debilitating. In today's Daily Dose, Dr. Lacey Anderson addressed a viewer’s question about what to do when painful periods become too much to bear.
Painful period cramps can be improved with birth control pills, which can regulate periods, decrease the flow and the duration of periods, and help with cramping.
For those seeking more options beyond the pill, Dr. Anderson noted several alternatives, including birth control shots, intrauterine devices (IUDs), implantable devices, as well as birth control patches or rings. There is even a new over-the-counter birth control pill available for those without access to a doctor.
However, when standard treatments aren’t enough, Dr. Anderson recommends consulting with an OBGYN. Severe cramps could potentially be caused by a condition called endometriosis, which is more common in people with very heavy bleeding during periods. In some cases, doctors may suggest exploratory surgery to confirm the diagnosis.
Dr. Anderson also emphasized the importance of knowing when pain signals something more serious. If you’re having severe pain that feels much worse than normal cramping, that can be a reason to be seen urgently in the ER. Conditions such as ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, appendicitis, ovarian cysts, and intestinal infections can mimic or intensify period-related discomfort.
