Last Suspect In Neal Sweeney Murder Case Found Guilty

A Tulsa jury returned with a guilty verdict in the final trial in the case of murdered Tulsa businessman, Neal Sweeney.

Alonzo Johnson was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and first degree murder.

The jury recommended a sentence of life in prison, plus a $10,000 fine for the murder charge. They also recommended life for the conspiracy charge, since he had two or more prior convictions.

District Attorney Tim Harris said he would ask for the life sentences to run consecutively.

This was the last of three trials in what prosecutors called a murder-for-hire case.

Sweeney was shot and killed in his east Tulsa office in September 2008. Prosecutors said Johnson helped stake out Sweeney's office and stole the vehicle for the trigger man to use after the shooting.

The trigger man, Terrico Bethel, was convicted of first degree murder in August.

There were three others involved in the murder plot. Mohammed Aziz pleaded guilty in exchange for a 25- to 35-year prison sentence. Fred Shields went to trial and was convicted and sentenced to consecutive life terms. After testifying against the others, Allen Shields committed suicide.

Johnson's formal sentencing is set for January 4, 2013.
