Hundreds of people gathered Monday morning in northeast Oklahoma City in anticipation for death row inmate Julius Jones' clemency hearing.
Several people from the Jones camp were across the street from the hearing with many listening to it on loud speakers.
As it got close to the Oklahoma Pardon & Parole Board's final vote, many were locked in arms. When the board members recommended clemency for Jones, the entire group erupted in cheers.
However, some close to Jones said it's been an emotional process.
“It takes all of us to get an innocent man off of death row with proven evidence,” said Antoinette Jones, Julius’ sister.
Monday was the first time Julius Jones has spoken publicly in 20 years, and family and friends told News 9 they think it made an impact.
However, the Howell family said they're once again disappointed in the board's decision and they just want justice for Paul Howell.
Jones was convicted of killing Paul Howell, an Edmond father and businessman, in 1999.
“He is a murderer, a liar, a thief, a sociopath,” said a member of the Howell family. “It just keeps going on and on, and he will do this again.”
Now, the board's recommendation will go back to Gov. Kevin Stitt's desk for approval.
