Oklahomans who have lost homes or property in recent wildfires can access free legal help, and other disaster recovery resources, at upcoming multi-agency resource centers in impacted communities.
Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma is one of the member organizations of OKVOAD, Oklahoma Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.
“Statistically, folks don’t really realize that they have a legal problem after a disaster,” said Christa Figgins, director of mission advancement for LASOK.
Legal aid teams can help replace legal documents and make sense of other legal challenges. They typically refer people to the Oklahoma Insurance Department for initial help with insurance claims, but Figgins said LASOK can help with further complications.
“Sadly, disasters are very, very effective at relocating or destroying all the important papers in your life,” she said.
Figgins gave credit to the other organizations belonging to VOAD, who she said are exceedingly talented partners during disaster recovery.
“We all work together very, very well and we trust each other,” she said.
