Oklahoma families can now register their seventh, eighth or ninth grade students for free tutoring, which could save them thousands of dollars.
The state department of education's Math Tutoring Corps is providing the free service.
The pandemic caused a lot of setbacks in learning. Anthony Purcell with Math Tutoring Corps said the program uses pandemic relief money to help get students back on track in mathematics.
"Just seeing the benefits of what can happen and helping students get that confidence that they can be a math person because a lot of people feel that they aren't," said Purcell.
Purcell said math tutoring can cost between $25 and $50 per hour. The cost can add up to several thousand dollars each semester.
The tutoring program can help take that burden away.
The students will meet virtually in groups of four. The sessions will last 50 minutes three times a week for 21 weeks.
The program is looking to hire 500 tutors comprised of state-certified educators, teachers and full-time college students.
The tutoring will be open to as many as 1,500 students across the state.
For those students who may be shy to tutoring, Purcell said it will be a welcoming environment because it will be virtual and with kids in different school districts.
Besides helping students, tutors hope that this will generate some excitement toward teaching.
"In addition to the benefits for students and families, we have tutors that indicated interest in becoming full-time teachers," Purcell said.
