The Tulsa State fair has come and gone, and the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, which was in charge of safety at the fair, was pleased with how everything turned out.
Tulsa County Sheriff, Vic Regalado, said that he doesn't have exact attendance numbers from the fair just yet, but he wouldn't be surprised if there was record-breaking attendance.
This year, the sheriff's office only made 22 arrests. Of those 22 arrests, only four guns were recovered, and those four individuals were charged. Last year, the sheriff's office only made 19 arrests, but they recovered 10 guns.
Given the number of people that came to the fair, Sheriff Regalado was proud of the work his crew did at the fair.
"Based on the size of the fair, everything went smoothly, and so we’re certainly grateful that there were no injuries, deaths, or anything like that. I think the overwhelming majority of the people who attended the fair were grateful for the service of our deputies," Sheriff Regalado said.
However, some numbers were up from last year. Sheriff Regalado said that his crew received 409 calls for service this year as opposed to last year's 291 calls for service. This year, there were 151 lost and recovered kids compared to only 137 last year.
Despite the good work and safe environment created at the fair, Sheriff Regalado is already looking ahead to next year's fair and thinking about ways to make it even safer than this year's fair.
"Getting ahead of that stuff so that we don’t have those rumors circulating that, again, aren’t based on fact is probably one of the things that we’re going to look into and how we can diffuse that much quicker than we did this year," Sheriff Regalado said.
