Fifth and sixth grade students in Crescent write letters to veterans for Veterans Day, little did they know the impact one of those letters would have.

“They wrote to over two hundred veterans, now some of those several veterans got more than one letter,” said Crescent teacher Audra Branson.

One of the veterans that received a letter was Sergeant Ed Fox, who developed quite the relationship with the students.

“My class called him on his birthday and sang him happy birthday, and then from there he’s like, I’ve got this crazy idea,” said Branson.

“I decided, I want to make a visit out here,” said Sergeant Ed Fox, a retired Marine and Army veteran.

So, at 100-years-old, Sergeant Fox loaded up his convertible mustang and made the trip from Springfield Missouri to Crescent Oklahoma.

“It was only 300 miles, but we did it in a reasonable time,” said Fox.

He arrived at the school to a hero’s welcome.

“I just opened it up to everybody and said ‘hey, we have this wonderful opportunity, if you’d like to support,’ and they all came out,” said Branson.

“I thought it was really cool. And to have a 100-year-old man driving a mustang convertible, I was just like wow,” said sixth grade student Jade Jackson.

Aside from the cool ride, the students have an appreciation for his service.

“Thank you for your service. Thank you so, so much. You’re such a blessing to us,” said sixth grade student Emmitt Garrett.

“I feel like he’s fought for our country, and somebody needs to appreciate this,” said Jackson.

Sergeant Fox served in both the Marines and the Army, but make no mistake, he is clearly a Marine through and through.

“The joke was I went into the Army to straighten it out,” said Fox.

“I just want to say thank you, because you went out there to fight for me, to fight for us all over America. Thank you, sir,” said Jackson.

Sergeant Fox and the students exchanged gifts and vowed to stay in touch.
