With Oklahoma City Public Schools' first day of class on Tuesday, district leaders are welcoming students back to the classroom.

With 34,000 students spread out in schools across the district, OKCPS Superintendent Dr. Jamie Polk said she is excited for the new year.

"It has been fabulous to see the students," Polk said. "What was most exciting when we got on the bus picking up students, the students already knew the bus driver, Mr. Carlton, because he was their bus driver last year."

Polk said Carlton has been a bus driver for the district for 44 years, and like other district employees, is passionate about their work.

"If you're with something for 44 years, you're not doing it because you have to, you're doing it because you love it," Polk said.

Several other districts across Oklahoma invite students back to the classroom this week. For a full list of school start dates across the state, click here.
