Despite heading into 2024 with a new head coach, experience is the name of the game in Weatherford this season.
The Eagles have a 22-man senior class, led by defensive end C.J. Nickson- an OU commit who happens to be the top recruit in the state.
At 6'5, 220 pounds, Nickson will quite literally be a huge part of the team's success this year. Along with his physical gifts, Nickson's teammates say he is a lovable guy who leads by example.
Head Coach Taylor Sossamon says his impact on the team has been remarkable. "It's hard to put into words. He is a tremendous athlete, but he is a tremendous person too. A person of high character. You never have to wonder what he is doing off the field- he is always doing the right thing. He comes from a great family. You can't say enough good things."
Sossamon has been on the staff at Weatherford since 2017, but this will be his first season as the head coach, and he has high hopes for the program under his control.
"Hopefully, it looks like a bunch of maniacs trying to execute their responsibility with a great attitude and, hopefully, great character as well," said Sossamon.
Senior wide receiver and defensive back Cy Scammahorn said, "Coach Soss is the dude. We love Coach Soss and we always have. I feel like we are going to have a great season. I can't wait."
Nickson adds, "I think he is going to be more energetic. He definitely gets a lot more out of us than we have in the past."
Weatherford is hoping to improve greatly from its 6-5 campaign last season. The 2024 season kicks off Sept. 6 against Kingfisher.
