Parents And Prosecutors Fed Up With Guns In Oklahoma Schools

Two guns were seen on a school campus on Thursday afternoon at Eash Central High School in Tulsa, bringing the week's total count to four.

Police arrested two adults for having the guns at East Central. The school said there was a fight earlier in the day, and later afternoon the two men showed up on campus with guns. 

Police arrested 18-year-olds Kamerin Night and Trenton Talbert plus a third person. Hearing the news on top of a week where there was a deadly school shooting in Georgia, made parents nervous.

“I'm sending my kids to school to make them better, not to risk their lives,” said Mother Melissa VanRanken. 

Earlier in the week, a student at Union High School had a gun in a backpack, and a student at Sapulpa High School had a gun in their car. Both were taken into custody.

Parents said it's hard to understand.

“I think I'm just concerned about all the students; I mean we want our kids to feel safe when they're going to school. I don't think they expect to have their peers carrying guns,” said VanRanken. 

Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said even one incident of a gun being on a Green Country campus is too many.

“I've had enough with seeing some of this stuff. It's putting all of our community at risk.”

Kunzweiler said while he's concerned about the guns being at the schools, his bigger concern is how students are getting them in the first place.

“This isn't the Tulsa Police Department's responsibility to monitor your kid. It's not the Tulsa Public Schools or any school in this jurisdiction's responsibility to be parenting your kids. That's your responsibility,” Kunzweiler said. 

Tulsa Public Schools said an employee saw the two men approaching the East Central Campus and immediately called law enforcement.

The good news is, in all of these cases, someone heard or saw something and immediately reported it and all four incidents were handled quickly, without anyone getting hurt.
