As New Year’s resolutions take shape, Oklahomans are encouraged to kick off 2025 with a First Day Hike at one of the state’s 28 parks.

News 9’s Jordan Ryan took the Arca-Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch to Lake Thunderbird to highlight the initiative to reconnect people with nature.

While fresh air and sunshine are always free, parking at a state park usually costs, but on Jan. 1, all state parks are waiving that fee for First Day Hikes.

At Lake Thunderbird, registration runs from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., with hikes beginning shortly after.

The park offers two trail options, including an ADA-accessible path, making it an inclusive experience for families, individuals with mobility needs, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Participants can also visit Discovery Cove Nature Center, featuring interactive exhibits and knowledgeable staff.

Thunderbird offers a 25-mile mountain bike trail and summer activities like sailing for those seeking adventure beyond the New Year.

There are also various statewide experiences, from Quartz Mountain’s buggy rides to water sports at Thunderbird.

First Day Hikes began in 2012 as part of a national initiative to encourage outdoor activity.
