Inclusive Intertribal Heritage Celebration set for January 24

Families with loved ones of all abilities are invited to celebrate Native American culture at the Inclusive Intertribal Heritage Celebration on January 24, hosted by Sooner Success.

The event will feature safe spaces, including a sensory calming room, to ensure comfort for attendees who may need a break.

“This is a welcoming space for families, especially those with a loved one with special needs, to participate in tribal events,” said Aita Stevens, director of Sooner Success and a member of the Kiowa Tribe. “Music, art, dancing — it’s going to be amazing. We want everyone to feel like they’re part of the community without any judgment.”

As a parent of a child with special needs, Stevens emphasized the personal significance of the event. “Our traditions are so important,” she said. “My husband is Creek and Wichita, and our daughter is Kiowa. It’s exciting that this event is intertribal, and we want to welcome all Native American families and the broader community.”

Sooner Success, a statewide program supporting families with special needs, is working through its Supporting Minorities with Disabilities Coalition to create culturally specific, inclusive events. “We want families to know we value them and recognize the importance of culture,” Stevens said.

The celebration will take place on January 24, and families are encouraged to register in advance at soonersuccess.ouhsc.edu to ensure accommodations are prepared.
