The Red Bud Classic is just a few months away, bringing a variety of races and a community-driven mission to support local nonprofits.
"Our event is for all. It doesn't matter your age, your ability level," said Kristen Hersom, an event organizer. "We design all of our events to get the whole community out."
Participants can choose from several events, including a bike ride with 10-, 30-, and 50-mile routes, as well as running events such as a 5K, 10K, two-mile walk, kids' fun run, and even a dog walk.
This year's beneficiary is Sisu Youth Services, an organization that helps youth and young adults experiencing homelessness in Oklahoma City.
"We work with 15- to 24-year-olds, those that might need somewhere to stay," said Rachel Bradley, a representative of Sisu Youth Services. "Everything from emergency first night in shelter all the way through to several housing programs and getting young people reintegrated into the community and setting them up for stability."
The event also relies on a strong volunteer presence. "Yes, a ton of volunteers. So that was a huge lift for both us and for your crew as well," Bradley said.
Each year, the Red Bud Classic selects its nonprofit beneficiary through an application process.
"We have an application process, which is actually kind of coming up now," Kristen said. "They'll turn it in in April, and we have a committee from our board that will sit down with all of the applications and then take it to our final board meeting of the year to choose the following year's beneficiary."
Registration for the event is open at redbud.org, where participants can sign up to race or volunteer.
