The Oklahoma City Police Department has confirmed that Joseph Gibson, the Oklahoma City officer involved in an excessive force incident in 2024, is no longer employed with the department.
The altercation was caught on the police body camera footage, which showed the elderly man, Lich Vu, flicking the Gibson in the chest after refusing to sign a ticket for a traffic citation. The officer responded by grabbing Vu's arm and forcing him to the ground.
Gibson was placed on leave following review of the altercation.
Vu was hospitalized as a result, and underwent surgery for a brain bleed he sustained during the incident. Gibson was criminally charged for the incident, but those charges were dropped by the Attorney General Drummond, after determining that the officer did not "exhibit criminal intent."
The Oklahoma City Police Department told News 9 on Wednesday that Sgt. Gibson was no longer employed, but had not been terminated.
UPDATE: An attorney representing the victim, Lich Vu, has shared the following statement.
"Confirmed that I represent Lich Vu. I anticipate filing a federal civil rights lawsuit before the end of April 2025."
In a statement the president of the Oklahoma Fraternal Order of Police said,
"The OKC FOP has engaged in meaningful discussions with leaders in the Vietnamese and Asian communities to foster understanding and help prevent incidents like this in the future. We support Sergeant Gibson in his decision to resign. We stand firm in our commitment to advocate for our members as they strive to preserve law and order in this community."
