The doctor is in and today it is Pediatrician Doctor Courtney Sauls from Ascension St. John Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.
Dr. Sauls talked with us about eczema. It's a common skin condition in kids that can flare up in the dry winter.
Eczema is a condition of the skin barrier. The skin can become very irritated and itchy and cause a red and dry rash. It can be inherited or environmental. In babies, it's most commonly on the face, stomach, and back. In older kids, it's common behind the knees and elbow creases.
Whenever the cold and dry winter air arrives, that can make eczema a lot worse. A child's environment if they have asthma or allergies can also trigger eczema. It can also be inherited. Kids might get it from their parents.
The biggest key point for treating eczema is moisture. The skin needs to be moisturized with a thick lotion or cream. Some of Dr. Sauls favorite brands include CeraVe moisturizing cream, Euciren, Vaseline, and in some cases you might need to try steroid ointments or a prescription from your pediatrician.
